Season One #1-"Changes" When Jo's husband dies, she is left with the responsability of Plumfield. When parents start pulling their kids out of school, Jo must find new ways to keep the school open. Nan is brought in as the first female student. Nick becomes the caretaker, and Franz puts off Harvard to teach. Dan and Nan "They might even have to amputate!" "And don't talk either, just sit there and shut-up!" #2-"Quarantine" When Marcus brings the measles back from Boston, the school is put under quarantine.It is a bad case, and many fall ill. Marcus eventually dies. Nick has to learn to deal with his fear of death, and Nat learns to believe in himself. Jo and Asia "What would you do without me?" "I don't even want to think about it." #3-"Thanksgiving" Laurie and Amy enroll their daughter, Bess, at Plumfield, though Amy in not happy about it. Bess does not want to be there and won't even try to make fiends. Nan, trying to get even, puts a snake in Bess' bed. When she appoligizes, she invites Bess to go fishing and Bess goes. They have a great time and Bess decides to stay at Plumfield. Meanwhile, Nick's sentence is up and he is free to go. But after he gets to Boston he changes his mind a returns to Plumfield. Nan to Bess "Did you know that if you boil it, the skin comes right off?" Laurie to Jo "I'm sure there are other convicts you can pluck out of jail." Nan to Jo "We're like cats and dogs, but that don't mean we can't be friends." #4-"Tough Choices" After robbing a couple at gun-point Jasper, an old friend of Dan's comes to Plumfield to try and talk him into going west with him. Meanwhile, Captain Hoffman brings a new teacher to Plumfield to take Franz's place. Jasper tries getting Dan in trouble so he'll have to leave Plumfield, but the plan backfires and he lands in jail. The new teacher tells Captain Hoffman that he is resigning from the school, but that he should let Franz teach. Franz to Dan "...eat your fractions!" #5-"Emancipation" Nat, in search of a chicken thief, discovers a poor black family living in the woods. Jo invites the family (Josiah, Ruth and Issac) to stay at Plumfield for a few days. Josiah learns to trust, Isaac learns to be more attentive and Jo learns that there is more than one form of pre..... #6-"Christmas Angel" Nick and some of the kids find a woman, Sara Ryan, on the brink of passing out. She had been beaten by her husband. Though she has problems on her own, she helps Jo and Nan come to terms with the loss of their loved ones. She also helps Nat put on a lovely Christmas Pagent. #7-"Philanthropy" When Jo's horse, Penny, becomes sick with pnemonia the vet tells them to put it down. Nick secretly nurses the horse back to health with Dan's help. Jo starts to teach Nick how to read. Jo to Dan "You can never have too many books, Dan." (I couldn't agree more :o) !) Nan to Everyone "I made porrige for everyone, it's my gift to you!" #8-"Bluffing" When Nan has difficulty writing a story for class, she steals one from Nat. He finds out, but lets it go. She then asks for his help on a story for the newspaper, he ends up 'writing' it for her. Meanwhile Laurie, wanting to be 'one of the guys', joins in a poker game and ends up losing his cuff links plus a whole lot more. #9-"Coming Attractions" When Meg becomes interesred in Edward, a friend of Laurie's, Jo has to come to terms with not only meg moving on, but her own feelings for Nick. Meanwhile, Nan and Nat try to get Dan and Bess to kiss, but they end up kissing each other instead. Nan to Nat "Of course, that's why Dan and Bess are always fighting. They're courting, just like aligators." #10-"Blame" jo is on her way home when her horse is spooked by gunfire and runs off. She is injured in the accident, but is found by a man, Lucious Potter(sp?). Meanwhile a storm is brewing and the kids must get Plumfield ready. When Jo's horse returns without her, Nick goes in search of her leaving Franz in charge. Dan refuses to listen to Franz, causing a few problems. Nick finds the home where Jo is at, but is shot by Lucious. Jo must convince Lucious, who is a bitter man, to get Nick to the doctor. Nick and Franz "Jo asked me to pick up a few things while Asia is away, did you need anything?" "My sanity." "Breakfast?" "Anarchy!" #11-"The Living Years" Asia's father visits, but she wants nothing to do with him. It isn't until he dies, that she can forgive him and admit that she loved him. Meanwhile, Nick takes on a temporary job at the general store and the Propieter's niece takes a liking to him. Jo is jelous, but it turns out that Nick is not interested. Jo to Charlotte (quite smugly) "I better go see how Nick's getting along at home." Nick to Jo "That woman came at me like a freight train!" Nick and Jo "Lucky for me I'm in no rush to go anywhere." "Lucky for me." #12-"Father Figure" Nat is once again being picked on, but this time it's Nan that is sticking up for him. When Nick finds him so upset, he teaches him how to fight, behind Jo's back. Nat gains a new confidence in himself, but a bad lack of judgment when he picks a fight with a kid in town. During the fight he hits his head on the boardwalk and slips into a coma. When Nick tells Jo what they've been doing she tells him that he must be willing to take on the resposabilities of a father or leave Plumfield. #13-"Looking Forward" Dan is desperate to learn about his past so Jo makes a few inquiries to the orphanage in Boston. It turns out that Dan was found on Madison Street by a police man, who gave him the name Madison and left him at the orphanage. With the help of an Indian friend, he goes on a vision quest, because he feels lost. He comes home with a new perspective on live. Season Two #1-"Civil Disobedience" When Tommy Bangs falls from a tree and breaks his legg, Eli McBride sees it as the perfect opportunity to get Plumfield for himself. He convinces the Bangs to issue a lawsuit against the school for abuse and neglect. The kids must fight for their school, to keep it open. Nat to the Town "...It's not just our school, it's our home." #2-"Stepping Out" Amy is organizing an Enchanted Ball, and is allowing Bess to attend. Dan would like to ask her, but Bess has set her sights on a college man, Grayson Whittiker. When Grayson tries to take advantage of her, she realizes that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Meanwhile, both Jo and Nick would like to go to the dance together, but they don't realize that the other one wants to go too. #3-"Dangerous Lessons" Wanting to prove himself a man, Dan sneaks off to join a posse in search of a run-away lion. Though he proves himself a good tracker and marksman, he learns that it's not that easy to kill the prey. Meanwhile, Nat wins a local violin competion and a months worth of free violin lesson from a professional.When the teacher turns out differently than expected, Nat learns that he deserves to be treated better and to stand up for himself. #4-"Opposites Attract" Franz meets a girl who is quite different than he is, but he can't stop thinking about her. He loves to spend time with her, but thinks they are too different to be a couple. With a little advice from Nick, he desides to court her. Meanwhile, Laurie and Amy are going through a 'lull' in their marriage. #5-"Family Business" Asia receives a letter from her aunt, asking her to come take over her restaurant. Jo assumes that Asia is going to take the job, and starts to look for a replacement right away. Asia doesn't want to leave Plumfield, but is not feeling wanted. When Jo realizes what she has done, it's up to her to make Asia feel like part of the family. #6-"leap Of Faith" When Jo is robbed at gun point, she becomes afraid of everything. In order to help her overcome her fears, Nick tricks her into a trek through the woods. Meanwhile, news comes from Isabel's brother that he struck it rich in a silver mine in Colorado and has bought a ranch in Arizona. Isabel leaves with her family to help her brother run the ranch. Franz must deside if he'll stay at Plumfield, and eventually go to Harvard, or if he'll follow his heart to Arizona. Jo and Nick to Asia and the Kids "Don't worry, I'm not angry." "Yeah, not now!" #7-"Brothers and Sisters" Nick's brother, Ben, comes to town for a visit, but he also brings some trouble with him. He is being followed by two gamblers that he owes $200.00 to. Going against Jo's advice, Nick helps him out another time, but Ben gambles that money away too. When Nick tries to make him pay for his own mistake, Ben gets angry and leaves. Meanwhile, Bess has decided that she wants to become a professional singer... But her singing leaves something to be desired!
